Duke Men’s Basketball has a very large alumni base currently employed by the National Basketball Association. Because of the number of former Blue Devils making their living in the world’s best league, it’s no wonder that free agency has prominently featured former Duke players in the headlines.
As we enter the second full week of the Free Agency period, six former Blue Devils have signed new contracts worth a staggering 222.6 million with an additional six players still on the market looking for new deals.
The biggest and richest news to date was also the most widely predicted as Kyrie Irving moved to his third team, the Brooklyn Nets on a four year, 142 million contract almost as soon as the clock struck midnight on the first day of the new NBA fiscal year. Irving will, of course, join fellow super star Kevin Durant in New York once the latter returns from injury next season.
While Irving’s deal was certainly expected Amile Jefferson Jersey, his former Duke teammate, Seth Curry, shocked the casual league follower by taking home 32 million over four years in a return to the Dallas Mavericks. Prior to signing with his former club, Curry had made just over 8 million since graduating from Duke in 2013.
Upon reflection, perhaps it s not such a shock that Curry got a big deal. The league is both flourishing in popularity and places an increasingly high value on shooting and the ability to space the floor. Curry does both things very well as does former Blue Devil JJ Redick, who also signed a big deal.
Following a couple of one year contracts with the Philadelphia 76ers https://www.dukebluedevilsjersey.com/grayson-allen-jersey-c-4.html, Redick will be able to somewhat unpack his bags this season after signing a two year pact with the New Orleans Pelicans. In the Bayou he ll join fellow former Dukies Zion Williamson, Frank Jackson, Brandan Ingram and Jahlil Okafor.
Okafor was a possibly entry to the free agent market, but the team picked up its second year option of his two year contract signed last year, securing the former National Player of the Year 1.7 million for the upcoming year.
Austin Rivers, also capitalized on a one year stint with a new team, converting his strong performance with Houston into a new two year with the Rockets that will pay him just over 4.4 million.
Moving further west, former Blue Devil wing Rodney Hood also stayed put https://www.dukebluedevilsjersey.com/harry-giles-jersey-c-2.html, resigning with the Portland Trail Blazers for 16 million over two years.
Over the next few weeks former players such as Quinn Cook and Jabari Parker will likely find homes as well. Cook was set to play another year with the Golden State Warriors before the team rescinded his qualifying offer last week in a salary cap move.
Meanwhile Parker is expected to come off the board as well after completing a two year deal he originally signed with Chicago before being traded to Washington last year.
Other notable Duke related free agent decisions include those of Tyus Jones who is a restricted free agent and Luol Deng, https://www.dukebluedevilsjersey.com/chase-jeter-jersey-c-3.html whose career may be coming to an end, though the former Blue Devil is still being paid by the Los Angeles Lakers after the team bought him out last year. |
